I read in a recent BBC news story that grey has been named as the UK’s favourite car colour for the first time, taking the No 1 slot from black. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) reported that half a million people chose to buy a grey car in 2018 which is just over one in five of all new car registrations.
Black and white took second and third slots respectively, with blue fourth and red fifth. Car sales fell in 2018 so almost every shade of car colour saw a decline.
Notable exceptions were orange, which grew by in popularity by 37%, and beige which increased by 28%.
Cream saw the biggest decline being chosen by just 559 drivers and silver, previously a big favourite, dropped out of the top five.
The SMMT also provided a Top Ten of cars sold in the UK in 2018 broken down by model:
1. Ford Fiesta
2. Volkswagen Golf
3. Vauxhall Corsa
4. Nissan Qashqai
5. Ford Focus
6. Volkswagen Polo
8. Mercedes Benz A-Class
9. Ford Kuga
