I see the new driving test has been in operation for a few months now.

If you were not aware, these are the new requirements:

1. The independent driving section of the test has been extended from 10 minutes to 20, about half of the total test time.  This is the section when the candidates have to drive without turn-by-turn instructions from the examiner.

2. During this independent driving part, the candidates will be asked to follow directions supplied by a satellite navigation system (satnav).  The satnav is provided by the examiner who will also decide the route to be followed.  One in five candidates will not be asked to use a satnav but to follow traffic signals instead.

3. Many people struggled with reversing around a corner and three point turns.  These manoeuvres will no longer be tested.  Instead, candidates will be required to perform one of the following; parallel parking at the side of the road, parking in a bay either by reversing in and driving out or driving in and reversing out or pull up on the right hand side of the road, reverse for two car lengths and then rejoin the traffic.

4. The examiner will ask two questions about vehicle safety.  This will include, before any driving takes place, a ‘tell me’ question asking the candidate to explain how they would carry out a safety task.  Then, during the driving part of the test, there will be a ‘show me’ question, such as how to clean the windscreen using the wipers. Is it easier or harder than the old system?

I’ll leave you to be the judge of that!
