Enging Bay Cleaning July Blog - Elite Repairs and paint.

Whether you are looking to sell your car or just get it looking smarter, cleaning your car’s engine bay is brilliant for getting it looking in the best condition.

Over time, you will notice just how dirty and greasy your engine bay has become. For some car owners, it can be difficult to know where to start when it comes to cleaning it all. That is why we have put together this helpful guide to help you master the art of cleaning your car’s engine bay!

1.      Plan before you clean the engine bay.

Be sure that before you begin to clean your engine bay, that the car is cool. If you have driven your car not long before, make sure you give it time to cool down.

If your engine is hot and you begin to clean it, you could end up badly burning yourself or you could cause your car damage if you spray it with cool water as will cause rapid contraction.

Pick a nice warm dry day to clean your car’s engine bay as it will help the components and engine dry quicker.

2.      Remove plastics and cover sensitive electrical components in the engine bay.

Take off all plastic coverings and caps, these can be cleaned separately. Be sure that you cover all sensitive electrical cables and components to keep them safe from any water.

This step can take some time but is vital for keeping everything working and safe from damage.

You can remove the battery too however, this isn’t always necessary.

3.      Degrease and scrub the engine bay.

Using either household or purpose-made degreaser, spray and degrease your engine bay. This step will help remove any build-up of dirt and grease within the bay.

Don’t hold back, make sure you cover every nook and cranny!

Use a small synthetic brush to clean off any caked-on grease on common places such as your valve cover. If needed, add more degreaser and repeat.

4.      Rinse and dry the engine bay.

Rinse off your engine bay with a hose or a gentle setting on a power washer. Avoid any direct spraying on electrical components and try to spray in places you know will not take too long to dry.

Once you have carefully rinsed your engine bay, wipe it all down with a rag, towel or cloth. This will help dry the engine bay and remove any missed areas of grease and dirt.

5.      Clean removed plastics and place them back in the engine bay.

Clean the remaining plastics and caps, ensure that they are all dry before placing them back in the engine bay. Remove any coverings you have put over the electrical components too.

Step back and take in your lovely clean engine bay!
